Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, said that the latest report by the Organization of Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirms what has long been known as a fact as the report reaffirmed the Assad regime’s responsibility for the use of chemical weapons against civilians. He stressed that the findings of the OPCW’s report proves the impossibility of rehabilitating the Assad regime, which constitutes a threat to international peace and security.
Barakat told Arabi 21 news website that the latest OPCW report and the reports that preceded it place the international community in front of legal and moral responsibilities, adding: “The focus must be on how to topple the Assad regime, not on rehabilitating it and giving it a new lifeline.”
Barakat pointed out that the latest OPCW report came at an appropriate time to halt the progress of normalization with the Assad regime and block regional attempts aimed at rehabilitating the Assad regime. He stressed the need to find a mechanism to implement UN resolutions to find a solution in Syria by achieving a political transition in accordance with UN resolutions conference on Syria, particularly UN resolutions 2118 and 2254.
