Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee and Coordinator of the Office of Syndicates and Sports Federations, Abdul Majeed Barakat, stressed the importance of establishing the Sports and Youth Commission by the Syrian Interim Government (SIG) and the representation of free Syrian sports in international sports events.
Barakat was speaking at a press conference held by SIG’s Head, Abdurrahman Mustafa, to announce the establishment of the Youth and Sports Commission in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on Monday.
Barakat thanked SIG and the Syrian young athletes for the great efforts that have been made over many years in order to advance sports activities by establishing sports institutions.
Barakat stressed that the SOC attaches importance to injecting new blood from the Syrian youth into all the institutions of the Syrian Revolution.
He also stressed the importance of the work that the Sports and Youth Commission will do to represent Syrian sports in international sports tournaments so as to serve as a substitute for the Assad regime’s institutions.
Barakat called for stripping the Assad regime’s sports institutions of the right to represent Syria in international events as is the case with Russia which was prevented from participating in all tournaments in response to its aggression against Ukraine. He said that the Assad regime occupies Syria’s seat in the International Olympic Committee as well as in the United Nations.
