Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Abdul Majeed Barakat, stressed that the Assad regime has not disposed of its entire stockpile of chemical weapons and is still lying to the international community. He said that eliminating chemical weapons will only be achieved through the strict implementation of UN Resolution 2118.
Barakat welcomed the remarks of the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, before the UN Security Council on the violations of the use of chemical weapons in Syria. However, he stressed the need for the UN Security Council to take more serious steps to prevent the Assad regime from using chemical weapons again against civilians.
Moreover, Barakat pointed out that UN investigators have already confirmed the Assad regime’s responsibility for the use of chemical weapons against civilians, which requires that the UN Security Council to start implementing its resolutions and holding the regime and its symbols accountable.
The UN Security Council on Thursday held a session on the implementation of Security Council resolution 2118 with regard to dismantling Assad regime’s chemical weapons program in addition to the latest developments related to the fact-finding mission.
Nakamitsu said that the Assad regime’s declaration cannot be considered accurate and complete in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention. “The use of chemical weapons is a grave violation of international law and an affront to our shared humanity,” she declared.
