Secretary of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) political committee and Coordinator of the Caesar Act Follow-up Team Abdul Majeed Barakat said that the United States intends to impose more sanctions on the Assad regime and the parties that help it circumvent those sanctions.
In remarks he made to Al-Modon newspaper, Barakat pointed out that the expected US measures will come in the framework of Washington’s re-engagement in Syria. He made it clear that this return will come as a result of regional and international developments, expressing the hope that it would be a positive return that contributes to the implementation of the UN resolution, putting an end to the Syrian tragedy, and achieving political transition in Syria.
“The observer of American activity in recent months realizes that Washington is paying attention to all the Syrian political, military, economic and legal details in Syria.”
Barakat indicated that there is a clear American tendency towards stricter sanctions against the Assad regime and the parties that deal with it, adding that the Syrian file will witness greater attention from the United States, especially with regards to the issues of sanctions and accountability.
Barakat stressed the importance of the US role in Syria, calling for strict application of sanctions to prevent financing the parallel regime’s economy and its military and security machines.
