Coordinator of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s Caesar Act Follow-up Team, Abdul Majeed Barakat, said that the recent meeting with the US delegation headed by the US Special Envoy to Syria Joel Rayburn focused on the issue of sanctions and ways to tighten the noose on the Assad regime and its inner circle.
Barakat said that the two sides stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination as he pointed out that the American side praised the SOC’s efforts to ensure that the Caesar Act is implemented and will achieve its goals in view of attempts by the regime and its backers to dodge the sanctions.
Barakat added that the upcoming batch of sanctions will be more focused on the backbone of the regime’s economy. He said: “We commend the role of these sanctions as we stress the need to exclude food and medical supplies in all our meetings with the US officials.”
Barakat said that the US envoy talked at length about the upcoming batch of sanctions due to be issued later this month and which will target more than 20 individuals and economic entities that the regime uses to circumvent the sanctions.
He also indicated that his team is avidly seeking to ensure that these sanctions target the regime’s inner circle so that they prove effective and have a greater impact on the regime’s economy and its military machine. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
