Dara’a province witnessed shocking incidents in September with an upsurge in assassinations against civilians and militants alike. A total of 38 assassination attempts killed 21 people and injured 14 others.
According to the Victims Documentation Office in Dara’a, the victims included 12 former members of the armed opposition, nine of whom joined the regime forces after the later took control of the area in July 2018.
The Office pointed out that it documented at least 22 arrests and kidnappings as well as many cases of torture and summary executions in the province last month.
Vice-president of the Syrian National Coalition, Oqab Yahya, pointed out that Iran is behind these assassinations through complicity of the Assad regime’s thugs who have a proven track record of hunting down and liquidation of opponents,. He added that Iran still insists on establishing a foothold in southern Syria.
Yahya stressed that the latest incidents in Dara’a exposed Russia’s inability to rein in Iran in Syria and also its failure to commit to international treaties and resolutions.
Yahya called on the international community to intervene to put an end to violations in Dara’a province, launch an international investigation into these crimes, and transfer Syria to the International Criminal Court to hold accountable perpetrators of war crimes.
