He pointed out that at the same time, “EU will continue to support the mission of the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and international partners in efforts to destroy Syria’s stockpiles of chemical weapons. The OPCW had adopted a detailed plan to eliminate Syria’s stockpiles of chemical weapons by the middle of next year. France Releases Frozen Syrian Assets to Solve Food Crisis in Syria The Director General of the General Establishment for Foreign Trade told Reuters that frozen Syrian assets abroad are gradually being released in order to buy food. The European Union, the United States, and other Western countries had imposed sanctions on Bashar Assad’s government after its brutal crackdown on protests by the Syrian people inside the country; but those sanctions do not include food supplies. The director of the institution told Reuters over the phone: “The Union of Arab and French Banks and (UBAF) in France have agreed to release funds for purchases of food.” He added that “The UBAF in France was very cooperative.” France agreed in September to use the assets of frozen Syrian bank accounts to finance imports of food to Syria in the framework of the European Union’s program that allows the use of such funds for humanitarian purposes.
