The UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said that Vienna statement focused on reaching a complete ceasefire, which is linked to a credible political process that would help eliminate ISIS.
During a meeting with members of the political committee, de Mistura pointed out that the four “working groups” proposal was abandoned in favor of Syrian-Syrian consultations, adding that these consultations are preparation for the Geneva III negotiations.
For its part, the Syrian Coalition stresses that the Geneva I Communique and the UN Security Council resolution 2118 are still the reference point for the Vienna statement. It added that they are in line with the Syrian Coalition’s vision of establishing a transitional governing body with full powers, including the powers of the President, stressing that Assad and his ruling elite cannot be part of the transitional process.
