Spokesman for the Syrian Coalition Salem al-Meslet said that with every rebel gain against pro-regime forces they retaliate by escalating attacks on civilians using barrel bombs and internationally prohibited weapons, buoyed by the longtime silence and inaction of the international community.
“It is no longer easy to count the number of times the Assad regime violated international laws and UN resolutions, particularly with regard to the use of chemical weapons. Assad’s helicopters dropped a chlorine-filled barrel bomb on the towns of Sfouhin and al-Bashirya in rural Idlib earlier today after a similar attack occurred in the town of Kansafra yesterday. Today attacks have caused suffocation cases among civilians who were rushed to the nearby field hospitals.”
“Assad’s daily violations confirms that all international conventions and UN Security Council resolutions relating to the use of chemical weapons have so far failed to deter the Assad regime, and that any further delay in the imposition of no-fly zone will cost the Syrian people dozens of victims every day.”
Meslet calls upon the international community to take practical firm stand that begins with the imposition of a safe zone to rein Assad and to put a political solution back on track through the implementation of the Geneva statement and the formation of a transitional governing body with full powers whose task will be meeting the demands of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity and justice.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
