The Constitutional Committee’s drafting body on Wednesday concluded its second session, completing its discussions of the ideas and visions of the constitution which members of the expanded committee put forward during their meetings last week.
The opposition delegation focused its discussions on the 12 Living Intra-Syrian Essential Principles which were declared in the eighth round of Geneva talks and adopted by the Sochi Conference in its final communiqué and approved by the regime. These principles are one of the mainstays of the work of the Constitutional Committee along with the past experiences in order to draft a new constitution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people.
The 12 principles were mentioned in a letter sent by the UN Secretary-General to the President of the Security Council on September 26, 2019. The letter also contained a document of the terms of reference and the basic elements of the rules of procedure of the Constitutional Committee, which stated that the mandate of the Committee must embody the letter and spirit of these principles in the Syrian Constitution.
