Secretary-General of the Syrian Coalition Abdul Ilah Fahd stressed the need for political transition in Syria, adding that a lasting peace cannot be achieved without achieving full justice and holding criminals to account.
At a panel discussion about war crimes held at the American University in Washington on Monday evening, Fahd pointed to the need for international intervention to protect civilians from constant bombardment by regime forces and the Iranian-backed militias. Professors Robert Goldman and Juan Mendez participated in the panel discussion.
It very important to let everyone know what is really going on in Syria, Fahd said. He added that security forces, the judiciary, the army, and police forces run by Bashar Al-Assad and his clique are responsible for the carnage in Syria.
Speakers at the panel discussion pointed to the numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity being committed by the Assad regime. They noted that the state should be responsible for the protection of its citizens. However, the Assad regime did the opposite as it is killing, displacing, and detaining its own people.
Participants pointed out that former President Barack Obama missed the opportunity to stop the killing and push for political transition, adding that the UN Security Council should assume its responsibilities to protect civilians in Syria. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
