Secretary-General of the Syrian Coalition Abdul Ilah Fahd said that the Coalition has been putting the final touches to a draft resolution to be put to a vote at the UN General Assembly under the “Uniting for Peace” resolution.
Fahd pointed out that the draft resolution will be circulated to all UN members by the Coalition’s representative at the UN Najib Ghadiban. He pointed to coordination with the opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) to establish a joint working mechanism with the Friends of the Syrian people group.
“A team is currently working on drafting the resolution, which is a draft proposal, not a letter or a memorandum, and is not limited to the Friends of Syria group only,” Fahd told Asarq Al-Awsat earlier on Wednesday.
The Syrian Coalition’s political committee held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss political and military solutions after Russia on Saturday vetoed a French-Spanish draft resolution at the UN Security Council intended to curtail violence in Syria.
Fahd pointed to intensive efforts by the Coalition to form a “lobby” inside the UN composed of the Friends of Syria group with the aim of giving weight to the draft resolution.
Fahd stressed the urgent need for greater coordination with friendly countries and the international community to mobilize support for the move at the UN General Assembly and to ensure success. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
