Lebanese leader Samir Geagea has spoken out against a recent visit by a delegation of Arab parliamentarians to Damascus to meet with Bashar al-Assad under the guise of showing solidarity with Syria following an earthquake. Geagea described the move as “truly shameful” and accused the delegation of exploiting the tragedy that has befallen the Syrian people.
Taking to Twitter to voice his criticism, Geagea pointed out that while the earthquake had claimed the lives of 7,000 Syrian citizens, the Assad regime had killed hundreds of thousands more. He also questioned whether the delegation’s actions would only increase the frustration of the Syrian people, who already feel abandoned by their fellow Arabs.
Geagea emphasized that solidarity with Syria must not come at the cost of normalizing relations with the Assad regime, which has waged a brutal campaign against the Syrian people for their demands of freedom, dignity, and the right to life. He urged the international community to save the Syrian people from the unspeakable suffering inflicted upon them by the Assad regime.
The SOC stressed that efforts to normalize relations with this criminal regime by some countries is a grave mistake. Rehabilitating this regime amounts to accepting its crimes and brutality and giving it a green light to continue its aggression against the Syrian people. Since 2011, the Assad regime has committed countless crimes against the Syrian people, including chemical attacks, mass killings, arrests, and torture.
