Hakim Says Assad Responsible for Deaths at Sea on World Drowning Prevention Day

July 25, 2022
in Coalition News
Member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Nazir Hakim, stressed that the Assad regime bears full responsibility for the drowning of Syrians at seas while trying to seek refuge in Europe.

Member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Nazir Hakim, stressed that the Assad regime bears full responsibility for the drowning of Syrians at seas while trying to seek refuge in Europe.

Hakim made these remarks in an article published by Ninar Press website under the title ‘Refugees and the Sea: An Absolute Tragedy’ on the World Drowning Prevention Day. He pointed out that “the dictatorial regimes are forcing their peoples to resort to the sea and consider it safer than the land.”

Hakim said that the stories of the Syrian asylum seekers are heartbreaking on their journey to their destination, especially while crossing the sea and rivers. He added that to many refugees, the sea and nature are kinder to them than humans and the governments of the free democratic world. He also said that Syrian refugees are leaving their country to escape the brutal oppression by the Assad regime, its allied militias, and the remnants of its sectarian army.

“Had it not been for the Assad regime’s atrocious crimes, Syrians would not have left their land and country. When the axis of evil unleased its reign of terror, death and life became equal, so Syrians are risking their lives for a decent life,” Hakim added.

Hakim called on the international community to establish a mechanism for ending the tragedy affecting asylum seekers and addressing human trafficking. He stressed the need to deal with the asylum seekers in a humane manner as they did not leave their homes willingly, but by force.

Hakim also called on the United Nations, UN Refugee Agency, and European Union to stop showing disregard for the lives of the Syrian people. He called for seriously seeking to achieve political transition in Syria in accordance with international resolutions, adding that the Syrian people proved that they are future makers and are worthy of a decent life and deserve to live in freedom and dignity.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
