Head of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Nasr al-Hariri, condemned the international silence about “the massacre and the holocaust” being carried out by the Assad regime and Russian forces against civilians in the provinces of Idlib and Hama. He said that the Assad regime is using the threat of terrorism as a pretext for killing innocent civilians.
Hariri slammed the international media’s ignoring of the brutal bombardment the Assad regime and Russian forces have launched in Idlib since April 26 killing hundreds of civilians and forcing about 300,000 more out of their homes.
Hariri played down the emergency UN Security Council meeting which will be held to Friday to discuss the military escalation in Idlib as he expressed disappointment over the lukewarm international response to the military escalation in Idlib. He recalled previous meetings by the UN Security Council on the military escalations in eastern Ghouta and elsewhere and the Council’s failure to enforce the resolutions it adopted during those meetings.
Hariri also expressed his hope that the Friday UN Security Council meeting would not be a routine measure, calling for clear position to force the Assad regime and its backers to stop their onslaught on Idlib. He also called for a binding resolution by the UN General Assembly to avoid Russia’s use of veto and its disruption of the majority of the UN Security Council resolutions on Syria.
Moreover, Hariri stressed that the crimes that Russia, the Assad regime, and the Iranian terrorist militias are committing in the liberated areas put the lives of 3.5 million people at huge risk.
Hariri called on Turkey to step up its efforts and respond to the massacres taking place in Idlib at all levels as it is a guarantor of the Astana and Sochi tracks and has observation points and patrols on the ground. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
