Secretary of the Syrian Coalition’s political committee, Riyad Hassan, said that the Assad regime is seeking to destroy both the infrastructure of the country and the Syrian society through the systematic, deliberate targeting of vital civilian centers, including hospitals and schools.
Hassan said that the Assad regime and its allies’ attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure constituted blatant violation of all humanitarian norms and laws calling for sparing civilians, hospitals and schools.
Hassan stressed that Russia’s continued support for the Assad regime in the killing, destruction and displacement of civilians makes Russia a party to the conflict, which would disrupt the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 calling for an end to the Assad regime’s years-long war against the Syrian people.
The Assad regime’s ongoing onslaught on the countryside of Idlib and Hama is aimed at undermining efforts to achieve progress in the political process, whether the one sponsored by Moscow through the Sochi Conference or the UN-led process, Hassan added.
He called on the international community to mobilize all its humanitarian institutions to save Syrian civilians in Idlib and Hama provinces, especially women and children; rein in the crimes of the Assad regime, Russian and Iranian forces; ensure an end to the bombing campaign; and prevent further displacement of civilians.
