Riad Hijab, General Coordinator of the opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC), warned of the dire consequences of the mass forced displacement and demographic change operations being carried out by the Assad regime under the name of so-called local truces and reconciliations, particularly in the Damascus suburbs.
In a letter to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday, Hijab said that in addition to destroying Aleppo, the ongoing deadly aerial campaign by the Russian and Assad regime forces on the city is aimed at diverting attention away from the mass forced displacement of the local populations in the Damascus suburbs, Homs, and other areas across Syria.
Having forced residents of the Damascus suburb of Daraya out of their homes, the Assad regime on Thursday began emptying the Damascus suburbs of Qudsaya and Alhama of their indigenous populations. A similar evacuation deal was also reached in the district of Waer in Homs.
Hijab pointed out that the systematic destruction of rebel-held areas by the Assad regime backed by its Russian and Iranian allies as well as foreign militias imported from Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Russia is being carried out in parallel with demographic change operations and mass forced displacement of civilians in the rebel-held areas with the backing of Russia and Iran.
Hijab called on the United Nations to urgently lead effective international efforts to thwart the Assad regime’s plans and put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
