The opposition’s High Negotiations Committee reiterated it was the right decision to suspend participation in Geneva talks on Syria, adding that the decision was not only right but also timely.
Head of the opposition’s negotiating delegation Asaad al-Zoabi said that “the decision has reinforced coherence among components of the Syrian opposition. As a representative of the Syrian people, the negotiating team has remained true to the principles of the revolution.”
Zoabi added that “negotiations will yield tangible results only when the Assad regime agrees to seriously engage in direct negotiations. The opposition’s negotiating delegating is serious about the political process, unlike the Assad regime.”
“We did not come to Geneva to waste time. Pressure must be exercised on the regime to stop procrastinating.”
Zoabi stressed that the Syrian opposition is keen on effecting political transition in Syria as soon as possible. “We will not allow the regime to play for time. The international community needs to take strict action against the regime’s lack of commitment to the political process and force it implement international resolutions, particularly the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254,” Zoabi said.
