The opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) stressed the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities towards the file of detainees in Assad’s prisons. The committee said that the situation of those detainees amounts to a “humanitarian tragedy.”
HNC reiterated that releasing detainees, lifting sieges, and granting humanitarian access are not matters subject to negotiations.
HNC said that it fully supports the “Detainees First” campaign which has been recently launched by rights group and activists to draw attention to the plight of detainees in Assad’s prisons.
Syrian activists rekindled the values of dignity and freedom in the hearts of every Syrian in cities and towns across Syria. Honest and courageous activists sparked the Syrian revolution. Some of them died chanting for freedom; others were detained or kidnapped by regime security forces, HNC added.
HNC pointed out that all human values and international laws emphasize the right to freedom of expression, adding that all regional and international efforts must be primarily focused on the release of detainees as a basis for a political solution in Syria. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
