Coordinator of the Office of Refugee Affairs in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salim Idris, has expressed his support for the decision made by the Human Rights Council, which calls on the Assad regime to respect and safeguard human rights. However, he emphasized the difficulty of asking the perpetrator not to attack and protect their victims.
Idris stated that while they appreciate any measure that restrains the brutal regime and limits its criminal activities, they are fully aware of the challenges in implementing international resolutions and compelling the Assad regime to comply. He raised concerns about trusting the Assad regime when it comes to protecting refugees who are being forcefully returned to areas under its control.
Furthermore, Idris highlighted that without substantial pressure on the regime, international resolutions demanding the Assad regime to fulfill its responsibilities in protecting human rights will not be effective. He firmly stated that they do not believe those forced to return will benefit from such decisions.
During the fifty-third session in Geneva, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution urging the Assad regime to fulfill its obligations regarding the respect and protection of human rights for all individuals residing in the areas under its control.
In a statement published on Thursday, the Human Rights Council called on the Assad regime to ensure the protection of returning refugees from human rights violations and to actively contribute to establishing favorable conditions for their safe return. The resolution also emphasized the importance of releasing individuals who have been forcibly disappeared in Syria and providing accurate information about their fate and whereabouts to their families.
