The joint delegation of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and the Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) to the United States held a virtual meeting with representatives of political and popular bodies in Syria and the diaspora.
The joint delegation is holding meetings with diplomatic missions in New York on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
The joint delegation spoke about the visit and the results of the meetings. They pointed out that the meetings focused on three basic issues, the most important of which is the issue of detainees. The delegation stressed the need to establish an international mechanism to release the detainees and disclose the fate of the forcibly disappeared.
The delegation pointed out that the second issue was accountability. They said that there is an initiative by the Netherlands and the United Kingdom to establish a special tribunal on Syria with the aim of holding the Assad regime accountable for its crimes against the Syrian people.
The delegation said that the third issue was the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 as it demanded that the remaining tracks in the resolution be opened in parallel with the work of the Constitutional Committee.
For their part, representatives of political and popular bodies suggested a set of urgent proposals and recommendations to be put forward during the meetings of the joint delegation at the United Nations with the aim solving a number of issues that would alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.
The two sides stressed the importance of continued cooperation and coordination in order to enhance partnership amongst political and civil bodies in order to achieve the Syrian people’s demands for freedom, dignity and democracy.
