The joint delegation of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) and Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) to the United States met with the US mission to the UN on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. The two sides discussed the latest developments on the ground and in the political process.
The meeting brought together SOC’s Vice-Presidents Ruba Habboush and Abdul Hakim Bashar, SNC’s member Ibrahim Berro, and Deputy Representative of the US to the United Nations Richard M. Mills, Jr.
The joint delegation stressed the importance of the US role in Syria and its continued pressure on the Assad regime and its backers at the UN Security Council in order to reach a political solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity and democracy.
The delegation also stressed the need to open all baskets laid out in UN Resolution 2254 in parallel with the basket of the Constitutional Committee.
The delegation spoke about the importance of maintaining the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime as they target the head of the regime and its clique and exclude humanitarian and medical aid. They warned of attempts to normalize relations with the Assad regime or return it to the Arab League.
The delegation talked about the Assad regime’s crimes in Idlib as well as the violations of the PYD militia east of the Euphrates.
Moreover, the delegation stressed the importance of addressing the issue of detainees and supporting initiatives aimed at finding an independent mechanism for releasing detainees and disclosing the fate of the forcibly disappeared.
For his part, Mr. Mills reaffirmed his country’s continued support for the political process to fully implement UN resolution 2254, in addition to its support for the humanitarian sector.
He also stressed that the US will maintain sanctions on the Assad regime until a political solution is reached in the country.
