The Kurdish National Council organized a celebratory sit-in outside the Council’s representation office in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, to mark the 13th anniversary of the beginning of the Syrian revolution. The event was attended by Abdul Hakim Bashar, Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC).
During the gathering, SOC member Asmahan Sheikh Mous emphasized the ongoing struggle against the Assad regime, thirteen years after the revolution’s inception, which initially called for freedom, dignity, democracy, and equal citizenship for all Syrians.
Sheikh Mous highlighted the regime’s oppression and tyranny against all Syrians, including Kurds, citing atrocities such as use of barrel bombings, shootings of civilians, use of chemical weapons, arbitrary arrests, and torture to death.
Emphasizing the integral role of Kurds in the Syrian Revolution, Sheikh Mous praised the resilience of Syrians amidst challenging circumstances.
Sheikh Mous also commended the demonstrators in Suwayda for their continued resistance against the Assad regime, underscoring that their perseverance illustrates the enduring nature of the Syrian revolution despite oppression and hardship.
She urged the international community to take decisive action to implement UN resolutions on Syria, particularly Resolutions 2118 and 2254, to facilitate a political solution that addresses the Syrian people’s demands and facilitates the return of displaced persons, fostering a unified Syria for all its citizens.
