Vice-President of the Syrian National Coalition Hisham Marwa said that the “intransigence and insistence of the Assad regime on pursuing a military solution to the conflict is the main reason for the failure of all rounds of talks to reach a conclusive result. Assad’s advisor Buthaina Shaaban stated this in her speech at the Geneva II conference, when she said that a political solution is only decided by the military situation on the ground.”
Marwa’s remarks come in response to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov speech who said “previous attempts at dialogue crumbled because of the insistence of the West and some regional countries on designating one opposition bloc, namely the opposition in exile, as the sole representative of the entire people of Syria.”
Marwa stresses that the latest Moscow talks ended in disarray because the Assad regime has no respect for international resolutions, and emphasized the Syrian Coalition’s positive attitude towards any serious desire to find a political solution to the conflict.
