Vice President Hisham Marwa said that “while we realize the importance of Russia’s role at the international level, we hope that Russia changes its position in favor of supporting the aspirations of the Syrians.”
“Since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution Russia has assumed a supportive position of the Assad regime. Its blocking of UN Security Council resolution condemning Assad is in fact the main reason of the deteriorating situation in Syria. However, we hope that Russia supports a UN Security Council resolution that seeks to protect the Syrian people.”
“The Syrian people condemns and deplores in the strongest terms the role played by the Iranian regime in the region and the full support of the Assad regime in the ongoing military campaign against the Syrian people, now in its fifth year. The Syrian Coalition’s main concern is that lifting the sanctions imposed on Iran will allow it to channel more support for Assad.”
Meslet reaffirms the Syrian Coalition commitment to the principles and aspirations of the Syrian revolution, stressing the need to a political solution based on the Geneva Communique and the formation of a transitional governing body with full powers.
Marwa pointed out that the eradication of terrorism in Syria and the region is contingent upon the departure of the Assad regime which allowed extremist groups to grow in order to use them and as a bargaining chip and to present itself as a partner in the fight against extremism. Rooting out terrorism also requires the formation of a transitional governing body with full powers as was spelled out in the Geneva Communique and the relevant international resolutions.
“All the current efforts must be centered on the establishment of safe zones in northern and southern Syria to protect the Syrian people from Assad’s barrel bombs and the terrorist organization’s violations.”
He also stresses the need to continue to provide relief aid for Syrians in need, especially in areas besieged by the Assad regime.
Marwa also said that the international community must stop ignoring the suffering of detainees in Assad’s prisons, pointing to the inhumane conditions and torture of tens of thousands of detainees in Assad’s prisons. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
