Vice-President of the Syrian Coalition Muwaffaq Nyrabiya warned of plans by the Assad regime to force residents of the Damascus suburb of Muadamiya out of their homes in a repeat of the forced mass displacement of residents that took place in Daraya and other Damascus suburbs.
Nirabiya said that the UN continues to ignore this policy, which has been understood by the Assad regime as a green to carry on with such policies. He called upon the United Nations and the UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to explicitly and strongly condemn the forced mass displacement carried out by regime forces against rebel-held areas.
The Assad regime seeks a repeat of the Daraya scenario, when it has recently forced the residents of the Damascus suburb out of their homes under threats of total annihilation. Nirabiya pointed out that this policy amounts to a crime against humanity as the regime terrorizes and intimidates the civilian population to force them to leave their homes.
Activists in Muadamiya said that the Assad regime has lately sent threats to the residents of the district that it would be annihilated if residents did not leave.
Regime forces have tightened the blockade on Muadamiya since April 2016, further exacerbating the suffering of nearly 45,000 civilians trapped inside. Regime forces prevent the entry and exit of civilians as well as impede the introduction of humanitarian aid into the besieged district. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
