The Syrian opposition’s Negotiations Committee said it rejects and condemns the decision of US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the Israeli occupation and to move the US embassy to the city.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the Committee said that the move violates UN Security Council resolutions 242 (1967), 478 (1980) and 2334 (2016) which reject the granting of any legitimacy of the Israeli occupation over Jerusalem as occupied territory.
The Committee described the move as representing a blatant violation of the Arab and Palestinian rights to Jerusalem and clear bias in favor of the Israeli occupation at the expense of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people as well as their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The Committee called for a firm Arab and international stance to counter the unilateral American decision and seek to ensure it is cancelled. It warned that such decision risks causing further chaos and violence in the region.
The Committee reaffirmed commitment to international resolutions and working towards the establishment of a just and comprehensive peace in Palestine and the region. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
