The Syrian Coalition’s political committee is due to hold an expanded meeting on Tuesday to review the outcome of the meetings the Syrian opposition held in New York and discuss the deteriorating situation on the ground in Aleppo. Members of the Coalition’s General Assembly and the High Negotiations Committee will participate in the meeting.
Secretary of the political committee Riad Hasan said that the meeting will discuss the systematic attacks by the Assad regime and Russian forces on Syrian civilians and the ongoing onslaught on Aleppo. Tabled for discussion is also the future of the political process and the negotiations which the UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said were due to be resumed later this month.
A delegation from the Syrian opposition on Sunday cut short their trip to the United States in response to the unprecedented military escalation by the Assad regime and Russia on Aleppo. The delegation was attending the UN 71st General Assembly meeting.
Hasan said that the United Nations and the UN Security Council have shown complete inaction and failure in front when they allowed a mass murderer to carry on with his crimes against the Syrian people. Russia, the Assad regime and Iran have clearly opted for a military solution to the conflict thus blocking all chances of putting the political process back on track, he added.
A joint statement by foreign ministers of France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and the High Representative of the European Union on Saturday stressed that “patience with Russia’s continued inability or unwillingness to adhere to its commitments is not unlimited.”
The statement called upon the UN Security Council “to take urgent further steps to address the brutality of this conflict, and particularly the assault on Aleppo.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
