The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s political committee held its periodic meeting to discuss the latest political and on the ground developments. It strongly condemned the Russian-Chinese veto against a draft resolution to extend the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need in Syria.
Secretary of the political committee, Riyad Al-Hassan, said that the UN Security Council made a grave mistake by submitting to Russia with regards to the UN General Assembly Resolution 46/182 of UNSC Resolution 2504 (2020) and the draft resolution 2165 (2014) on the extension of the delivery of humanitarian aid which was met with a double Russian-Chinese veto.
Al-Hassan pointed out that the UN General Assembly Resolution 46/182 is related to emergencies resulting from natural disasters and the like. The consequences of natural disasters cannot be likened to the war crimes being committed by the Assad regime against the civilian population.
The Assad regime started to exploit this mistake by requiring its prior approval to enter humanitarian aid and restrict it to the border crossings under its controls, he added.
Al-Hassan called on the United States, the European Union, Turkey and friendly states of the Syrian people to take action outside the UN Security Council in order to ensure cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need in Syria.
He pointed out that it is unacceptable to grant more than seven billion US dollars to a criminal regime as this amounts to giving it a lifeline and a green signal to continue with its terrorist military operations against innocent civilians. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
