The political committee met with the new US envoy to Syria Michael Ratney on Thursday to discuss developments on the ground in Syria, especially the regime’s and Hezbollah’s assault on Zabadani as well as the latest political developments on the Syrian file.
The political committee members pointed to the deteriorating humanitarian situation and to the need for fulfilling the pledges made to aid the Syrian people, of which only 26% has been fulfilled.
With respect to the town of Zabadani and its surroundings, political committee members pointed to the tragic situation in the town as a result of barbaric bombardment by regime forces and the Hezbollah and Ahmed Jibril militia. Over 1,060 barrel bombs, around 1,500 rockets and thousands of mortar shells have hit the town so far.
The meeting touched on the briefing made by the international envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to the UN Security Council and the position of the Syrian Coalition on it. It also discussed the political meetings held recently on Syria, especially the Doha meeting as well as the intra-opposition talks, especially the latest Brussels meeting between the Syrian Coalition and the National Coordination Commission.
The meeting was also attended by interim Prime Minister Ahmad Tomeh and interim Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Salim Idris who discussed the training and equipping program and its prospects.
