The political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held its regular meeting on Thursday, where it discussed the latest developments concerning Syria’s military and political situation, the course of the war in Lebanon, and the actions of the PYD terrorist militia, which have been conducting appointments under the guise of “secret elections for local councils.”
SOC’s President, Hadi al-Bahra, provided an update on the outcomes of the Syrian Negotiation Commission’s regular meetings held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 17-20. Political committee member, Ahmad al-Sayed Yousef, also participated in the discussion, detailing the proceedings of the meetings.
Al-Bahra outlined the ongoing international communications regarding the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and those fleeing to Syria due to Israeli
military operations in Lebanon.
The meeting also discussed the potential consequences of the war in Lebanon for Syria, the fate of Syrians fleeing Lebanon to regime-controlled areas, and the impact this would have on European Union policies concerning Syria. The attendees reviewed the course of the war in Lebanon and the likelihood of it spreading to other countries in the region, especially in light of Iranian- backed sectarian militias using Syrian territory and the Assad regime’s complicity.
The Coordinator of the Al-Jazira and Euphrates Working Group presented a report on the results of the group’s latest meeting, which addressed the appointments of local councils carried out by de facto authority under the label of “secret elections.” This comes after the elections were previously postponed due to popular and international rejection, as they are seen to be controlled by terrorist and authoritarian forces in the region and fall outside the framework of the political process outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
