The political committee has convened today to discuss Staffan de Mistura’s invitation to participate in bilateral consultation talks in Geneva. The talks will be hosted separately by de Mistura with representative of the Assad regime and the opposition in early May.
The talks are aimed to lay the groundwork for the Geneva III conference for which a date has not been set yet.
Ahead of the talks, the Syrian Coalition reaffirms its commitment to a political solution and to resuming negotiations from the point they stopped despite the Assad regime’s insistence on pursuing a military solution to the conflict and on dodging all previous international initiatives in order to gain more time and to suppress the popular uprising.
Members of the political committee also discussed the developments on the ground and the rebels’ spectacular gains in northern and southern Syria. Vice-presidents gave a report on the Syrian Coalition’s visit to Qatar on April 21st.
In a related development, the Syrian Coalition is holding today a consultative meeting with rebel factions and civil society organizations to discuss the latest developments of the Syrian revolution and to lay out a unified political position on all upcoming international initiatives.
