President Al-Abda Urges Renewal of Resolutions on Humanitarian Access in Letter to UNSC

President of the Syrian National Coalition, Anas al-Abda, sent a letter to the UN Security Council resolution urging a renewal of the resolution on giving access to humanitarian aid for those in need in Syria via all border crossings, including those outside the control by the Assad regime.

President Al-Abda stressed the importance of commitment to the full implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2165 (2014) and its renewal through resolution 2449 (2018). He also called for the renewal of the decisions in paragraphs 2 and 3 of 2165 (2014) which expire on January 10, 2020 as per resolution 2449 (2018), stressing that such measures serve as a “demonstration of continued commitment to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.”

“Over the last two months… the conditions have deteriorated further due to the ongoing escalation in many parts of Syria, particularly in northwestern Syria in the Idlib province, northern Hama, and western Aleppo,” Al-Abda said.

“Millions of Syrians continue to be victims of the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria, which has been and continues to be the cause of displacement and destruction, mainly due to ongoing military operations and inability to receive much-needed humanitarian aid.”

President Al-Abda cited a report that the UN Secretary-General sent to the UN Security Council on October 15, 2019 on the implementation of resolutions, including resolutions 2165 (2014) and 2449 (2018). The report provided detailed information on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in different parts of the Syrians territories and continued difficulties of accessing many of the areas where the need is greatest.

“Furthermore, as the winter season approaches quickly, millions remain displaced to locations with no shelter of any kind, makeshift camps that do not have the basics for minimal living conditions, or camps that have proven unsuitable to withstand seasonal conditions like heavy rain and very hot or cold weather.”

President Al-Abda also called for closely monitoring and taking all necessary steps to ensure full implementation of the resolutions relevant to humanitarian assistance provision to all Syrian territories, particularly those with the gravest humanitarian conditions, such as Idlib, northern Hama. western Aleppo, and Latakia, among others. He also called for increasing and expanding the scope of humanitarian assistance provided to meet basic and urgent needs, particularly those relating to shelter, food, education, and health services.

Moreover, President Al-Abda called for supporting the efforts of the political track to “achieve a political transition and call upon all relevant parties to engage responsibly to reach a comprehensive political solution by fully implementing Security Council resolution 2254 (2015), which among other things will ensure fundamentally resolving the humanitarian crisis in Syria.” (Source: Syrian National Coalition’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
