President Khoja thanked Germany’s Foreign Minister Steinmeier for his country’s ongoing support to the Syrian people during a meeting in Berlin.
President Khoja and Foreign Minister Steinmeier agreed that a comprehensive approach is urgently required to defeat ISIS and address the root cause of extremism, namely through a political transition to a future Syria without Bashar al Assad.
“As the Syrian crisis enters its fifth year, it is clear that the Assad regime is only committed to a military solution… Assad’s air force is intensifying its brutal daily bombardments across Syria and using chemical weapons against unarmed civilians, most recently against women and children in Idlib province two days before,” Khoja said.
“Assad’s brutality and the terror unleashed by ISIS now pose a clear and present danger to international security… The first step must be the imposition of a no-fly zone to protect the Syrian civilians.”
President Khoja and Prime Minister Ahmad Tomeh also met senior German government officials. They welcomed commitments of support from the German officials in building the necessary moderate governance structures to prevent the return of extremism and for the long term recovery of a post-Assad Syria.
