Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haitham Rahma, expressed his support for the anti-regime demonstrations calling for the overthrow of the Assad regime in Al-Suwayda province.
“We stand with our people in Al-Suwayda as we reaffirm commitment to our national unity. We take pride in the courage of our people and their insistence on regaining their rights. We reaffirm our rejection of the Assad regime’s crimes against the Syrian people and also of all forms of aggression at the hands of the Russian and Iranian militias,” Rahma said.
Rahma stressed that these protests defied the regime’s tightened security and its deployment of militias in the city of al-Suwayda. The protests clearly showed the Syrian people’s insistence on achieving their demands and their iron will to overthrow the Assad regime and restore national sovereignty.
Moreover, Rahma pointed out that these demonstrations express the demands of the majority of the Syrian people. However, the regime’s tightening of security and the deployment of sectarian militias and Iranian mercenaries prevent many Syrians from expressing their opinion, he said, stressing the continuation of the Syrian revolution until building a free Syria and achieving all the demands of the Syrian people.
Rahma called on the United Nations and the major actors in Syria to enforce UN resolutions, most importantly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN resolutions 2118 and 2254 so as to bring about a full political transition, put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, ensure the release of detainees, and achieve freedom, justice and democracy.
