Haytham Rahmeh, the Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has called for the international community to treat the Assad regime as an international criminal, as it continues to commit atrocities against the Syrian people, support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and flood the world with drugs.
Rahmeh further stated that the Assad regime’s crimes have extended beyond Syria’s borders, as it has sent explosives experts to manufacture barrel bombs during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Rahmeh also criticized Russia’s recent summoning of Bashar al-Assad, whom he described as a war criminal, to Moscow. He emphasized that the Assad regime does not represent the Syrian people and rules the country like a gang without any concern for the Syrians’ suffering. Rahmeh added that Assad’s talk of a permanent presence for Russia in Syria is an attempt to consolidate Russia’s illegal occupation of Syria.
Rahmeh stated that the Syrian people and the institutions of the revolution and the Syrian opposition stand with Ukraine and support its legitimate defense against foreign invasion. He expressed hope that both Syria and Ukraine would soon enjoy peace and security, and stability would return after defeating the criminal forces. Rahmeh continued by saying that despite the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime, it still provides services to Russia and aligns with it politically.
He concluded by emphasizing that the international community must not give the Assad regime a platform in the United Nations and other international forums to spread its lies. Rahmeh stressed that the Syrian revolution would continue its fight for freedom and dignity until its demands are achieved, even though it has now entered its thirteenth year.
