Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, welcomed the initiative launched by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the occasion of reviving the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He also welcomed the calls for an end to arbitrary detention and the release of detainees.
Rahmeh said that celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights needs to be accompanied by practical steps on the ground that begin with the release of detainees and the disclosure of the fate of the forcibly disappeared in the prisons of the Assad regime.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for an end to arbitrary detention and the release of those detained for exercising their human rights.
Türk called on governments and all authorities to review these cases and decide to start this year with a step towards realizing the vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which envisions a world “in which all people live free and equal in dignity and rights.”
The Commission launched an initiative involving activities that will last for over a year, starting in December 2022, with the aim of recalling the unanimity that this important document aims for by focusing on its legacy, strength and inspiring energy.
