Haytham Rahmeh, the Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), issued a resounding condemnation of the heinous crimes committed by the Assad regime during its recent military escalation in northwestern Syria and the tragic massacre in the western countryside of Aleppo. These harrowing events unfolded in tandem with a horrifying incident in Ukraine, where Russia’s bombing of a food store and cafe near Rubyansk resulted in the devastating loss of approximately 50 innocent lives.
Rahmeh said: “The striking similarities in the nature of these crimes, whether in Ukraine or Syria, paint a grim picture. Both populations continue to endure the relentless acts of terror perpetrated by Russia and its allies, living under the shadow of constant fear and panic due to recurring assaults on innocent civilians.”
He further emphasized: “While we unequivocally denounce the horrifying massacre in Ukraine, it is imperative to underscore that today, the Assad regime and Russia unleashed their fury upon approximately 25 villages and towns in the liberated areas of Syria, exacting a heavy toll in terms of civilian casualties and numerous injuries.”
Rahmeh underscored that brutal dictatorial regimes forge unholy alliances across multiple regions, enabling terrorism to take root in both Syria and Ukraine. This pressing situation demands swift and effective international intervention to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian and Ukrainian peoples while promoting global peace and security.
He also pointed out that, despite the unrelenting assaults by the Assad regime and Russia, the Syrian people stand shoulder to shoulder with their Ukrainian brethren, steadfastly supporting their right to reclaim territories occupied by Russia through its aggressive invasion of Ukraine.
