Haytham Rahmeh, Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has emphasized that a sustainable resolution to the refugee crisis and the ongoing mass displacement of the Syrian people hinges on the overthrow of the Assad regime and the accountability of its leader, Bashar al-Assad. Rahmeh underscored that any solution deviating from this fundamental framework amounts to mere illusory notions with no practical feasibility.
Rahmeh attributed the prolonged stay of Syrians abroad to the international community’s lack of action against the Assad regime. He emphasizes that the survival of this regime in Syria remains a significant obstacle preventing millions of Syrians from returning to their homeland.
Addressing countries hosting Syrian refugees, Rahmeh extended gratitude for their support and underscores the importance of ensuring refugees are granted all rights stipulated by international laws and norms. He highlighted the necessity of streamlining legal procedures for refugee residency in host nations, accepting even expired passports and providing travel documents.
Rahmeh called upon host nations to enact legislation against racism and hostility toward refugees, promoting harmonious coexistence between diverse populations. He also cautioned refugees to complete all required legal documentation and comply with the laws of their host country.
Regarding refugee deportations, Rahmeh cited violations of international laws, emphasizing ongoing risks to returnees’ lives. Reports have revealed that those deported to areas controlled by the Assad regime face arrest, torture, and even death. Additionally, he noted that similar threats exist if refugees are sent to regions controlled by the PYD militia, as it relies on compulsory conscription to replenish its forces, without excluding women and children.
