Member of the political committee Adnan Rahmoun said that Iran, in complicity with the Assad regime, is trying to bring about demographic change in Syria through the systematic displacement of residents in areas in and around Damascus.
Rahmoun cited the evacuation of 250 residents from the besieged town of Madaya on Wednesday. The agreement on evacuation was sponsored by Iran whose allied militias, mainly Hezbollah, have laid siege on Madaya for over 9 months.
Rahmoun pointed out that the Assad regime, which falsely claims it defends Syria’s sovereignty, has given Russia and Iran a free hand in the areas under its control. He added that the Iranian-supported mercenaries now have the upper hand in many areas across Syria. Rahmoun cited an incident when Hezbollah militias lowered the regime’s flag a few days ago and raised their party’s flag instead right under the nose of the regime’s army officers who did not object to that.
Rahmoun reaffirmed the Syrian Coalition’s rejection of any attempts by the regime or by Iran’s agents in Syria to force the local population out of their homes. He called upon the UN Security Council and the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) to exercise pressure on the Assad regime and its allies to lift the blockade on the besieged areas and allow the delivery of relief and medical aid to the civilians trapped inside.
Rahmoun concluded his remarks by stressing that the regime’s use of trapped civilians as a tool to achieve political gains must stop. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
