A report issued by the Media Office confirmed that the Assad regime’s ongoing brutal campaign against the Syrian people have left more than 270,000 Syrians with disabilities, such as amputations, severe deformities, paralysis, and brain injuries. The report, entitled “Syrians with Disabilities, Suffering Twice” aims to shed light on the suffering of forgotten victims of the conflict, whether in refugee camps in neighboring countries or inside Syria. The sheer number of persons with disabilities reflects the magnitude of this enormous tragedy, which is caused by the Assad regime’s daily indiscriminate bombardment of opposition-held areas and the severe torture inflicted on detainees in Assad’s jails. There are growing concerns that the number will dramatically increase if immediate measures are not taken and persons with disabilities are not given protection.
