The Assad regime forces and their allied militias continue to carry out assassinations and arrests in Dara’a province, with an increasing frequency since the regime regained control of the region in July 2018.
According to the Free Houran Conglomerate, a local activist group, 41 people lost their lives in Dara’a province in May, including two women and a child. Among the victims were two young men who died under torture in Sednaya Military Prison.
The Conglomerate also documented 33 assassination attempts during the same month. These attempts resulted in the death of 18 individuals and the injury of 13 others, while three individuals survived the assassination attempts.
Furthermore, the Conglomerate recorded 21 arrests by the Assad regime forces in Dara’a during May, with four of those individuals being released within the same month. The group also documented 12 cases of kidnapping in the province, with six individuals being released in May. One kidnapped person was killed, while five individuals remain in captivity.
The activist group emphasized that the actual number of detainees in the province is likely higher than what they were able to document. Many families of detainees fear retaliation from the Assad regime, leading them to withhold information about their loved ones.
