Rights Group Records 589 Arbitrary Arrests across Syria in July

The Syrian Network for Human Rights on Friday said that it recorded no fewer than 589 arbitrary arrests across Syria in July, including 387 cases of enforced disappearance.

In its latest report on the arrests in Syria in July, the rights group said that the detainees included 38 children and 24 women. The figure has brought to 3,049 the number of arbitrary arrests since the beginning of 2019.

According to the report, the Assad regime detained 296 people in July, including 16 children and eight women. It noted that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham detained 11 people, including one child. The PYD militia was responsible for at least 227 arrests, including 18 against children and 14 against women. Nearly 55 people, including three children and two women, were detained by groups that the rights group was not able to identify.

The report indicated out that the majority of the arrests took place in the province of Aleppo. It said that the arrests took place at around 127 checkpoints across Syria and in raids on civilian homes. The majority of these raids were carried out by the Assad regime and the PYD militia.

The Network stressed the need for the release of children and women as it called for stopping the use of families and friends as hostages. The official in charge of the issue of detainees in the Office of the UN Envoy to Syria called for including the issue in the next Geneva meetings. He said that the issue worry Syrians more than any other issue that can be discussed in a participatory manner between the parties after political agreements have been reached, such as the drafting of a new Constitution.

The rights group called on the UN Security Council to follow up on the implementation of its resolutions on Syria. It also called on the UN Human Rights Council to focus on the issue of detainees and missing persons in Syria and to highlight the issue at its regular annual meetings. It also called for working with the active human rights organizations in Syria. (Source: Syrian National Coalition’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
