Seif Stresses Peace Linked to Withdrawal of Iranian Militias from Syria

President of the Syrian Coalition Riad Seif sent a letter to 30 countries friendly and sisterly countries as well as international organizations, particularly the United Nations, explaining the disastrous consequences of Iranian interference in Syria.

Seif emphasized that “no political solution in Syria can be reached as long as the Iranian intervention continues.” He stressed that “Syria and the region will see no peace or stability so long as the Iranian militias are operating in Syria unchecked.”

“It is no longer a secret the extent of Iran’s intervention in Syria and its disruption of all efforts to stop the bloodshed, meet the aspirations of the Syrian people; and ensure their legitimate rights.”

Seif went on: “It is indisputable that Iran’s intervention in Syria is illegitimate particularly that it is aimed at propping up a murderous regime that is responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of Syrians and that continues to target them with all means at its disposal, including chemical weapons.”

“Iran’s military intervention in Syria is the direct result of a strategic political decision by Iran and is being funded by the Iranian government and supervised by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the Basij forces, and the Iranian army,” Seif said.

“The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has formed several militias comprising militiamen from Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and other countries.” These militias, Seif said, now form the bulk of pro-regime forces and are deployed in many key areas across Syria.

“These militias are seeking to implement the Iranian regime’s plans to impose an extremist ideological project in Syria. To this end, these militias are pursuing policies involving ethnic and sectarian cleansing.”

Seif also said that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps and its affiliated groups have pursued policies of ethnic and sectarian cleansing in Syria. These militias fighting alongside regime forces were involved in at least 10 horrible massacres, including the massacre of Deir Baalba in Homs and several other massacres in the villages of Aleppo countryside.

“All efforts to combat terrorism will amount to little as long as Iran is in Syria and continues to pursue its provocative ideological discourse accompanied by the promotion of a culture of incitement of violence and hatred,” Seif stressed.

“The Syrian Coalition reiterates that the international community, especially the permanent members of the UN Security Council and the presidency of the Council, have a responsibility to address this issue immediately,” Seif added.

Seif called for the designation by the UN, the US and the EU of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Iranian army, the Hezbollah militias (in Lebanon and Iraq) and all other Iranian-backed sectarian militias as terrorist organizations.

He also called for the adoption of a resolution condemning the Iranian intervention in Syria and ensuring the withdrawal of all personnel affiliated with the Iranian regime and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps and all other Iranian-backed sectarian and terrorist militias from Syria.

Seif concluded the letter by calling for the referral of the issue of human rights violations and crimes against humanity in Syria to the International Criminal Court. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
