Head of the Syrian Interim Government (SIG), Abdurrahman Mustafa, called on the United Nations to protect four million civilians in Idlib province from the constant, barbaric bombardment and shelling by the Russian Air Force and the Assad regime forces. Mustafa made the calls at an interview with Amanda Roberts, the United Nations Political Affairs Officer in charge of Syria and an accompanying delegation at SIG’s headquarters in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on Tuesday.
Mustafa stressed the need to take urgent action to stop the bombing and protect civilians, pointing out that the vast majority of the population of Idlib are civilians who have been displaced by the Assad regime, many more than once.
SIG’s Minister of Local Administration Mohammed Suleiman and Director of Foreign Relations, Yasser Al-Hajji, took part in the meeting. The discussions touched on SIG’s role in the management of the areas east of the Euphrates.
Mustafa highlighted SIG’s role in these areas, citing the recent formation of a local council in the town of Tel Abyad through agreement by the residents of the town. He also said that SIG has established a military police force in the town, adding that work is underway to establish a civilian police force and civil courts as well as activate the judiciary. He stressed that SIG’s Ministry of Defense will hold all those who abuse their powers to account.
