The Directorate of Documentation of Violations and Human Rights in the Syrian Interim Government (SIG) organized a workshop under the title “how to support detainees and the forcibly disappeared persons in Syria: towards an independent, effective international mechanism” at the SIG’s office in the liberated areas.
The workshop brought together Head of the Syrian Interim Government, Abdurrahman Mustafa, the Director of Documentation of Violations and Human Rights, the Director of the Free Bar Association, the representative of the Free Aleppo Provincial Council, representatives of the local councils, the Association of Female Ex-detainees, non-governmental organizations, representatives of detainees’ families, and human rights activists.
The workshop discussed many main points, including those related to crimes of arbitrary arrest and enforced disappearance in Syria, the crimes of the criminal Assad regime, and the major gaps in the efforts to support the issue of arbitrary arrest and enforced disappearance in Syria, and the best solutions.
The workshop aims to lay out a common vision for civil actors and the Syrian Interim Government with regard to ways to establish an independent international mechanism and ensure the effectiveness of its role in addressing the task of disclosing the fate of the forcibly disappeared, releasing detainees, and supporting justice in Syria.
