Badr Jamous, the Secretary General of the Syrian Coalition, hails statements made by Nabil al-Arabi, Secretary General of the Arab League, who said that the situation in Syria must be referred to the United Nations or the Security Council to take the next step after the talks were deadlocked at Geneva II. Jamous stresses that if Geneva II talks break down, the situation in Syria must be referred to the United Nations or the Security Council to put the international community in front of its commitments towards the Syrian people and to put pressure on the Assad regime to agree to a political solution. Jamous also said that “if Russia vetoes a potential UN resolution, then actions outside the Security Council must be taken following the example of Iraq to end the ongoing tragedy in Syria. Moreover, Jamous said that “we look forward to American and Russian positive initiatives through putting real pressure on the Assad regime to agree to a political solution. Despite the ongoing war, we will remain committed to a political solution.” Regarding the presence of specific promises made to the Syrian Coalition by the United States and Russia to force the Assad regime give up its recalcitrance, Jamous said that “the United States and Russia do not give promises, and everyone became aware that the only way to deal with the Assad regime is through the use of force. The political solution has become a fait accompli, and we went to Geneva II with the aim of lifting the siege imposed by the Assad regime on Syrian cities and towns and of forming a transitional governing body.” Jamous pointed out that the Political Commission of the Coalition will hold meetings tomorrow or the day after tomorrow to review what has been accomplished in the last round of Geneva II negotiations and to discuss the future steps to be taken to strengthen the position of the Coalition, and to develop solutions to save the Syrian people from the criminal Assad regime.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
