On the occasion of the World Teacher’s Day, which falls on October 5th of each year, the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) reminded the international community of its responsibilities towards the education sector in Syria, especially towards teachers and students in particular.
In a press release issued on Monday, the SOC said that “the past ten years saw systematic destruction of education infrastructure in Syria. The Assad regime and Russia’s bombing of schools and educational centers is clearly aimed at turning Syria into an epicenter of ignorance and darkness.”
The SOC also said that the Syrian Interim Government and educational organizations are making tremendous efforts to protect and repair the remaining educational centers as well as to provide them with qualified teaching staff.
“Despite all these efforts, more support is still needed, especially in light of the current health conditions and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the educational process. There is an urgent need for means of communication, namely computers and phones to give students access to online education.”
The SOC added: “As education helps ensure a better future of our country and our region, failure to support this sector risks leading to decades-long dire consequences.”
“On this day, we salute teachers as we express our deep appreciation for their efforts, steadfastness, and selfless devotion to their mission.” (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
