The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stressed that the Assad regime’s sending of experts in the manufacture of barrel bombs to Russia, as was reported by the Guardian newspaper, confirms the regime’s involvement in a military partnership with Russia in its war on Ukraine and in the war crimes it is committing there.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the SOC said: “Indeed, the Assad regime has offered nothing but death, crises, terrorism and criminal militias for Syria and the world. Helping Russia with the manufacture of barrel bombs is a dangerous indication of the possibility of an increase in the number of deaths, losses and destruction in Ukrainian cities.”
The SOC also said that this weapon “is one of the most indiscriminate ones. The Assad regime has systemically used this weapon to devastate the rebellious Syrian cities and towns and displace their people.”
The SOC reaffirmed its support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people as it stressed the necessity of bringing peace to the whole world.
The SOC called for completely isolating the Assad regime by suspending its memberships in the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council and all other international organizations in response to its responsibility for hundreds of crimes in Syria and abroad. It also called for holding it accountable for these crimes in the International Criminal Court, and achieving a political transition in Syria in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
