The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stressed that the true place of the Assad regime is the International Criminal Court in a press release marking the fifth anniversary of the Assad regime’s chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun.
The SOC stressed that International investigators and rights groups have proved that the Assad regime is responsible for this massacre. This was also confirmed by the UN Joint Investigation Mechanism which concluded in a report that the Assad regime was behind the sarin attack on Khan Sheikhoun on April 4, 2017.
The SOC reiterated the need to activate Article 21 of UN Security Council resolution 2118 calling for taking practical measures against the regime under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The SOC also renewed its calls for achieving justice and holding the Assad regime accountable for the war crimes it has committed against the Syrian people for over 11 years.
“We warn against perpetuating impunity and the failure to serve justice for the hundreds of thousands of victims so that the Assad regime does not encourage the rest of the tyrants and criminals to use prohibited weapons against civilians with impunity.”
The SOC added: “Indeed, the Assad regime has proved that it is a criminal, dictatorial regime through its behavior based on killing and destruction and its policies based on allying with dictatorial regimes. This has been evident in the past several years, as the regime killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians, and today it supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
April 4th marks the fifth anniversary of the Khan Sheikhoun Massacre, which the Assad regime committed by bombing the town of Khan Sheikhoun in rural Idlib with rockets carrying sarin, killing 91 civilians and injuring 520 others.
